Well…you should! Water is the most important nutrient in all diets. It is at the basis of the food pyramid in the Mediterranean Diet.
Water is an essential element for life and it is involved in all physiological processes. A good hydration is a key element for the perfect mental and physical performance. However, dehydration is very common for western people and in particular the percentage of population with inadequate intake of water may vary from 5% to 35% in the different European countries. Elderly, young people and athletes have to pay even more attention to a good water intake because they are more at risk.
Dehydration is linked to many problems and symptoms (headache, asthenia, constipation and many others) moreover if we are speaking about sport nutrition one of the major factors limiting athletic performance is mild dehydration which can have a significant impact on working capacity and performance. For an athlete it is necessary to personalize quantity and kind of fluid intake.
In this regard the Mediterranean model is very useful because it is rich in vegetables and fruits, which contain a great quantity of water. Drinking enough can also help to attenuate hunger and modulate appetite. This is important for overweight and obese people who have low level of water in the body.
It is recommended to drink 2,0 – 2,5 litres per day, especially in the first hours in the morning when the body has higher need of water. You can choose among different kinds of mineral water depending on individual taste or you can choose cold or hot drinks like herbal teas, tea, infusions without sugar to improve your hydration and your fluid intake.
Start your day drinking a big glass of water (with a slice or fresh juice of lemon if you like) or herbal teas before breakfast, you will feel more energetic and active!
